(11/07/2006) BFTA announces results of Fur Design Competition 2006
The British Fur Trade Association (BFTA) is pleased to announce the winners of the BFTA Fur Design Competition 2006.
The results are as follows:
First Prize - Shena Neville, Kingston University
Second Prize - Chailie Ho Yu, Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
Third Prize - Charlotte Marsden, London College of Fashion
The winning design was a dyed red silver fox fur coat combining sharp tailoring, using cashmere and velvet with fox fur lining and collar facing. The garment will be put forward to the International Fur Trade Federation's (IFTF) design competition in 2007.
Entrants were required to design a collection of womenswear garments incorporating the use of fur. The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to appreciate the possibilities for using fur in fashion. Prizewinners were selected because of their ability to design fur garments that were innovative and wearable.
As part of the project, finalists attended a workshop at Saga Furs in Denmark where they learnt about fur and were introduced to the different techniques that are possible.
Following a week at Saga Furs in Denmark, First Prizewinner, Shena Neville, said: "The visit to the Saga Design Centre was a fantastic opportunity and experience. It gave me an in-depth understanding of the production and quality of fur, which is essential when designing with it.
Working with the BFTA and Saga Furs has allowed me to work with the finest quality fur, and gain an extensive knowledge of various techniques and developments within fur production. Fur is a unique and versatile product that I have loved working with. The BFTA has allowed me to continue working with fur, which I would definitely like to do in my future career."
The final judging panel included a representative from Saga Furs, a designer at Hockley and BFTA director, Frank Zilberkweit.
