Welcome to the British Fur Trade Association (BFTA) website.
Through communication with politicians and officials, the media, fashion colleges, designers and the general public the BFTA aims to raise awareness of the fur trade and to help dispel myths about fur.
Our members include retailers, traders, wholesalers and manufacturers. BFTA represents over 95% of the British fur trade. Our fur trader members buy pelts at international auction and are responsible for buying a significant share of fur traded on the world market as pelts. The trade is worth some £400-£500 million a year to the UK. Today, fur is not only sold through fur retailers but through many designer boutiques.
The British Fur Trade Association (BFTA) is a member of the International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF). The IFTF promotes strict codes of practice that meet or exceed established and accepted animal welfare standards for wild and farmed fur. The BFTA and IFTF strongly condemn cruelty to animals.
The British Fur Trade Association contributes towards worldwide animal conservation and welfare programmes through its membership of the IFTF.
Fur is a fashion item, purchased to express a consumer's individuality and creativity - and to fulfil their desires. To those living in particularly cold climates, it is also an essential part of their wardrobe, used daily to protect them from the elements, and just as valuable now as it has been for most of human history.
Fur remains a supreme example of a fashion product that derives from a wholly natural sustainable resource, is long-lasting but ultimately biodegradable, delivers rare benefits in sustaining fragile communities and habitats, and which embodies traditions of human craftsmanship that few other modern products possess.
